You might have recently gotten a Labrador Retriever or it could be an older dog that you just decided you want to get trained. I know that I have a Lab-Retriever who had been trained once, but when I got him the people that had him before did not reinforce all of his training. If this is your case then you will want to figure out what commands that your dog knows then you can start on getting him back into that mood of following them. This could be a challenge and here is how I managed to get my Lab back into his training.
Now the first thing that I had to do was get a leash and collar that would fit him properly. Once I managed to get one that he would understand that I was the one in charge I got him to listen a little bit better. Now I did have to do some remedial training with him, but it was not a class that I had to take. He remembered the commands very quickly because he is such a smart dog.
Now if your just getting your Labrador Retriever I will know that your going to be in for a challenge because my Lab even though he is older is still full of energy. So you will have to consider that you will be teaching a high energy dog. I know that the higher the energy level the harder time you will have in controlling him and teaching him.
The first tip that I would have to help you with the training of your Lab would be to try to exercise him before training. Now this may sound kind of odd since he might not be listening to you already exercising him will help you wear him out so he will start to listen.
The other tip that I would have for training your lab is that while he is still young enough you will need to establish that you are the dominant. Now obedience training is one great way that will help you learn to do this. In obedience training you will learn more than what you thought possible to teach your dog and then you will gain his respect and he will start to look up to you as the leader.
Training a Labrador Retriever is not hard to do, you just have to do it when they are still young enough for you to gain their respect. Remember they are a smart dog and they are also energetic to a point so you will want to try to handle that high energy problem first. Once you have that problem take care of training them will be a breeze for you.
I live in Ohio with my wonderful husband and two beautiful children. I have two English Mastiff puppies, a Lab-Retriever, and a Yorkie Poo. I also have two cats who came to us as strays. I love sewing, crocheting, and managing to take care of my zoo at the house. Since I have so many pets I have a strong interest in animal issues.
