In finding the right puppy, you must first know how to locate the best breeders for that breed in your area.
To find the right dog breeder, look in publications that are devoted to the dog breed you have in mind, and you will find sections that lead you to a good breeder. High-quality dog publication such as Dogs USA and Dog Fancy, which cover multiple breeds, are also a good choice, as they contain lists of good breeders that might be in your area. There is also much information posted online, but just be careful of the reliability of any sources.
Another great resource to find the right breeder is your local veterinarian, who might have at least one breeder as a client. Most vets will also have a list of qualified breeders in the area he practices.
If you have any friends or acquaintances who own a dog of the same breed (and the dog is a very good example of that breed), find out where they acquired their animal and ask for contact information.
When you have found the right breeder, make an appointment to visit and see the puppies. In seeking and choosing a puppy from a litter, there are several criteria you should keep in mind: good health, robustness, a great temperament, good soundness and structure for the breed, and a good pedigree.
Determine which puppy is active, and which is quiet. Which puppy seems to enjoy being around people? Which one takes to you the most? Which is the most compatible with your personality and lifestyle? Finally find the one with the best structure for his breed. Every breed has particular characteristics that are desired in purebred dogs, so keep that in mind.
When you do find the puppy with most of those characteristics, and has caught your eye and heart, then that puppy may be expensive. Good breeders know that value in their particular puppies, so they will charge you more for the best ones in the litter. If the dog is show-worthy or breeding-quality, the puppy will cost you even more.
A quality breeder will also want you to take over where he left off, with maybe the first steps to housebreaking and leash training possibly taken care of. After all, his reputation is at stake, so if this turns out to be a high-quality dog, the good word will spread to his breeding business.
